From a squad standpoint, Ashley was effectively dead weight. This time, Kaiden could handle the tech and biotic abilities that I lacked entirely and I could take some hits to keep him alive longer. That meant that Ashley's skillset was identical to my own. In my second playthrough, Shepard was a soldier. Thus, Kaidan's honorable sacrifice on Virmire was an obvious matter of practicality. (He's better in ME3 in that respect) Ashley, on the other hand, had the skillset to make up for my lack of combat abilities and could actually stay alive longer than 20 seconds. Furthermore, it became clear very early in the game that Kaidan had the durability of wet tissue paper. That meant that Kaidan's tech abilities were redundant and his biotic abilities could be handled just as well, if not better, by Liara or Wrex. In my first playthrough, Shepard was an engineer. My decision who to save on Virmire is usually based entirely on which of them has the skillset that better complements Shepard in that play through. That being said, I don't actually DISLIKE either one of them. I find Ashley's personality a little more likeable simply because she has a sense of humor, while Kaidan is all serious 95% of the time.
